Creating our art beds

This post was originally created for the Sheridan Life blog.

Painted by hand in the Sheridan Sydney Design Studio, our signature art beds are a favourite each season. We take a moment with Head Designer Rebecca Burnard who reveals the creative process behind three of this season’s key designs.

For AW17 we continue to uphold our rich heritage of bringing unique Australian art to life and taking it into the home. Each season we travel to all corners of the country on design inspiration trips, admiring the raw, natural beauty of our surrounds and honing our craft. For our newest collection we explored painting, sketching and collage, utilising a variety of mixed media to create our newest art beds – Carraway, Bartlett and Arbor.

Crafting Carraway.

We began with a celebration of abstract colour. The Carraway Quilt Cover explores shape and colour on a large scale for vibrant, visual impact in the bedroom. Inspired by the spectacular oceanic views of the Mornington Peninsula, a raw, textured canvas was the perfect starting point. We layered this surface with deconstructed techniques like painterly brushstrokes, charcoal mark-making and textural rubbings. These graphic elements were then scanned into the computer and arranged on-screen to create the final composition. This digital step allows us to refine the piece to create an aesthetically pleasing artwork which is dynamic, yet balanced.

Painting Bartlett.

The Bartlett Quilt Cover was an exercise in contemporary colour blocking. To craft this high energy design, we used a roller technique to block out large-scale sections of colour with quick, directional strokes. This patchwork of colour, texture and tone was then layered on-screen to create a bold, abstract style artwork with a cheerfully modern feel.

Collaging Arbor.

A nod to the painted floral trend, the Arbor reversible bed features bold native florals rendered in a contemporary colour palette. Hand painted in gouache in the Sheridan Sydney Design Studio, the flat, graphic floral elements were then collaged into a lively composition to create a fun, energetic statement in the bedroom. We finished the bed with a delicate hand painted spot reverse, offering the perfect visual relief to the large scale graphics.

The process of creating original artwork and textile designs in the Sheridan Sydney Design Studio is always exciting for us. We love seeing our creative ideas evolve and the satisfaction of watching our art come to life on the beds in our showroom. The best part, of course, is seeing how the artwork we produce translates in the home, styled and personalised by our customers in a myriad of ways.
